For decades people have been provoking me to make a fairy-tale album. But I’m stubborn enough that I even turned down the invitation from the late, much-missed Hungaroton label, which could have replaced the banned “Kopaszkutya” under the title “Folk Tales about Lenin”. At one point I also toyed with the idea of something called “Erdős Tells the Story”. Since the years have made me wiser and the audience has stayed with me, I decided to put together a concert where I gather those of my songs that can be called somewhat tale-like and unleash them on the crowd. (Hopefully this will finally make people stop asking about the fairy-tale album.) And now the opportunity has come at Budapest Park to create a world where reality might begin to feel like a story. To do that I’ll bring in a puppet actor, a dancing clown, living tableaux, projections, a fairground crier, a trained bear — who could that be? — and a thousand-year-old witch with an iron nose. We’ll also summon the likes of Furfangos Nyesztyerka, the Fool, the Reverend Father Barrel, Robin Hood, Csapajev, a rabbit, a wolf, a tiger, a few ladies of questionable virtue and a horse trader. (There will be no party secretary — except for Ljonya Brezsnyev) Several people around me suggested that the show should be titled “Hobo Tells a Story” or perhaps “Hobo’s Tales”, but with the modesty for which I am so widely known, I declined and stayed with the original title. But enough storytelling for now. If you want more than this, come and see it for yourself. Respectfully, Hobo.
